My Students

Do you remember what is was like the first time your teacher introduced you to technology? For me, that didn't happen in elementary school but for my students, it absolutely did. Now they want more of it and I can't blame them. The only problem is that we are missing a reliable tech resource!

Our school is located in Washington, DC and is the home to 24 amazing first graders.

There have been times in our classroom where I have exposed my students to the benefits of technology. Lately, there have been issues with our laptop and the process of setting up has taken much longer than it should. In keeping up with my variety of learners, a technology resource is a wonderful tool for my visual and audio learners to retain information that is presented to them, just in a different way. With a netbook computer in the classroom, the process of setting up computer time is quicker. We won't have to spend time connecting and logging on to a possible unreliable resource and a small computer can easily fit on our small cart which holds our projector. Setup time is now reduced to mere seconds! An even bigger plus is that we will not have to spend time locating a working laptop in our school community.

My Project

In these few short months, my students have become accustomed to a website called Brain Pop. Brain Pop allows them an interactive opportunity to explore the same concepts that we discuss in all of our subjects. Even more appealing to my students is the fact that the person providing the instruction on the Brain Pop website is an early learner, like them, who is accompanied by her sidekick robot friend Moby. The intonation of her voice is friendly and the animation and antics of Moby create overall learning and laughter in the classroom. This is especially helpful when introducing my students to concepts such as blends and letter sounds in reading, money counting strategies in math, and websites with scientific demonstrations to understand scientific concepts in science. My visual learners will have a field day with this resource as they will be able to better grasp the skills and goals that need to be accomplished by the end of their school year.

A computer in the classroom doesn't stop with Brain Pop.

There are many educational websites that will assist my students in their learning process. The size of the computer does not matter to us at all. It's what is inside that we are concerned about and with your help, my students can continue in exploring the benefits of technology. Many schools use technology on a consistent basis and I would like the same opportunities for my early learners.
