My students need the Awesome Animation kit from Tinkercrate so they can observe how two or more objects drawn in frames will appear to move and synchronize as if it is one distinct object.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in my STEM elective class are pretty creative and very energetic. They are a mixed group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors from different boroughs. They are predominantly Hispanic and African American kids who all together attend our school in lower Manhattan. They are a fun loving group of kids who are all eager and excited to learn something new every day. I explained to them that since this is a STEM class it required a lot of patience when doing hands-on activities, open mindedness, a lot of imagination, collaboration, as well as logical thinking. I am inspired by these students because every day when they come in my classroom the first thing they tell me is, “Ms. What challenge are we going to do today?” which gives me an idea that they look forward to doing creative engineering types of work.
My students love the STEM challenges.
They were all either on the floor designing and measuring or drawing their prototypes. Some were also refining their prototypes and testing their designs as they were doing the challenges. Everyone in the classroom participates regardless of reading levels or math levels. All worked together and made their projects to the best of their abilities.
My Project
My students need the Tinkercrate STEM kit Awesome animation help them visualize how perception and vision changes our understanding of the environment. The kit includes two projects: a Zoetrope and a Thaumatrope.
A Zoetrope is one of several pre-film animation devices that produce the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs showing progressive phases of that motion.
A Thaumatrope is an optical toy that was popular in the 19th century. A disk with a picture on each side is attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear to blend into one due to the persistence of vision.
Both the Zoetrope and Thaumatrope projects will help my students understand how visual perception of the environment changes as a result of constant motion.
