Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are bright, energetic middle schoolers. My school population is made up of students from a low-income community with a high percentage of English Language Learners. In spite of the challenges my students face on a daily basis, they have the deep desire to learn, to design, and to develop their skills every day.
These are great kids and many, if not most of them, have not been exposed to the career possibilities that are available in engineering, science, and math.
This is only a tiny exposure to the larger world of what can be available to them. Most of them do not have the resources to build these projects outside of this program, so I am working to help my students to see the opportunities available to them.
My Project
I am working to develop and offer a Tinkering Club for Middle School kids. I want to provide them with an environment where they can be creative and work collaboratively. They can use critical thinking skills to solve problems by designing and testing solutions. They will communicate to one another and to me about their thinking and how they are utilizing their problem-solving skills.
A tinkering club will allow my students the opportunity to apply their creativity to real-life technical problems.
This after-school club will allow them to develop a first-hand understanding of how to use math, science, and engineering to create results-oriented outcomes with items such as Cylinders, batteries, electrical tape and even light bulbs!
However, in order to make that happen, students require the technological components necessary to build their creations. Gears, motors, measuring devices, hardware, and tools are the bare minimums to allow their ideas to become realities. This investment marks a new beginning at my school to greatly expand student opportunities and helps to ensure that students are all college and career ready for the 21st Century!
