The cost of ten economy timers is $185, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is important for my second graders to practice their reading fluency every single day. Some of them don't have books at home, or simply don't read. Their only chance is to do it at school. Because we use Open Court Reading, we need to practice not only reading comprehension but fluency as well.
We use special second grade booklets that have passages with the number of words at the end of each line. This way they know how many words they have read. Students read with a partner, who is also timing them for one minute. At the end of one minute the partner can tell how many words they read and how many mistakes they made.
I would like to have battery-operated timers for each pair of students. This will help the partners only focus on checking the reading instead of keeping a constant eye on the sand timers that I currently use. Sometimes they forget about the sand timers and this defeats the purpose of the activity.
