This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Dr. Seuss wrote, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Inspiration? Check. A classroom library full of great kid literature? Check. Time set aside for reading in class? Check. Monitor reading at home? Houston, we have a problem.

My class is full of lively and well-intentioned kids.

They are fourth-graders in a small urban school just within sight of the downtown highrises of our city. Their greatest challenge is increasing their ability to read. They have the basics, but require the volume of reading that will make the greatest difference in their lives. Over two-thirds of them scored below grade-level on our annual state test.

My Project

I have requested 28 digital timer bookmarks. These will go home with my students where they will use them to track their time reading. Students set the bookmarks to read for twenty minutes, and when time is up they ring a soft alarm. Twenty minutes of reading a day can add up to more than a million words a year! My students will be excited to read with the digital bookmark and will learn how to monitor their own reading. This will lead them to build up their reading habit and help them become lifelong readers.

I can provide an excellent classroom library and good instruction.

Also, I can provide the environment where reading is valued and encouraged. But in these hard economic times, and already stretched thin, what I can't provide this year are the digital bookmarks that I honestly believe will have a huge impact on my students' reading success. For that, I ask your help. Thank you.
