My Students

What was the first myth you ever read or learned about? Was it about Pandora, or, maybe it was Poseidon? In today's world of No Child Left Behind, the study of ancient mythology is practically obsolete.

I teach fifty 4th grade students from fifteen area schools who have been identified as gifted.

There is no funding for gifted education in Alabama. Any materials we get are purchased from our own pocket. While the school in which I am housed has a library, there are not near enough resources for the unit I wish to teach.

My Project

My project is called "Time Trek." Students will travel back in time through a concept-based curriculum unit on the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Students will look through these civilizations through the conceptual lenses of culture, conflict, and identify. Mythology will equip my students to understand allusions in poetry and literature, as well as the daily newspaper and television. But mythology offers so much more: inspiration for many works of art (both written and visual), insight into human nature, a glimpse at an ancient people trying to make sense of phenomena they could not explain, and the source for many names and terms we use today. The books I am requesting will help make it possible for students to make real world connections to ancient mythology and their life of today.

My students will be surprised to find they're wearing shoes with the name of a Greek goddess (Nike), rooting for (or against) a team named after Greek gods (Tennessee Titans), and even listening to rock groups with mythological names (Styx).By funding this project, you will make it possible for my students to have print resources that would not be normally available to them.
