"Get ready to learn!" is what I always tell my 5th-grade students every day as a reminder of what they are here for. I start the day with song and dance and have my students pumped up and excited about the day ahead in Mrs. B.'s reading class. I strongly believe in motivation and engagement.
Ever since Hurricane Irma devastated our community, my students face the greater challenge of finding the supplies and accessing the resources they need and recently, we have begun welcoming students who were displaced by Hurricane Maria.
In order to succeed, these students need all the support, as their families experience even worse financial hardship than before.
My school has a high number of students who are English Language Learners, and there are a few who are part of special education and gifted program.
Because of language barriers, not all share the love for reading and writing in English, but I would say that the more they practice, the lesser the challenge-once they are motivated and engaged in the process.
My Project
As we are embarking to be designated officially a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) school, technology has now infiltrated every aspect of how our classes are taught.
After Hurricane Irma struck, most students came back with fewer supplies and less access to the tools they need to be successful.
Even with limited resources, using technology in my classroom has proved to be quite a success as the students learn quickly, discover and enjoy every lesson while developing STEAM exploration, as well as analytical and critical thinking skills.
I am requesting a laptop which will be used for STEAM online activities. My students now need to experience actually utilizing technology on a personal "one on one" basis, to enhance their language skills as well as computer skills. Currently, my classroom is very limited in terms of technology/computers. We are aiming to become a STEAM school in the upcoming school year, therefore, having our students get direct access to technology will prepare them for the near future. Your donation would enhance my students' lives and expose them to using technology in our classroom.
