Help me give my students enough writing tools for each student so they can be successful with their work and feel confident that their classroom has what they need.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are eager and energetic 8-9 year olds. I currently have a classroom of 22 students who love school and love to learn, which is a very good thing because our school is part of a district with more than half students labeled as at-risk, and almost 100% students are considered economically disadvantaged.
Despite these astonishing statistics, the students are eager to learn and participate in a safe learning environment to foster their creativity and stimulate their critical thinking.
My Project
Since I am the math teacher for 60+ students, pencils go fast! Picture this... you're back in elementary, ready to practice your math problems and you reach into your desk for a pencil. Nothing. So you walk to the back to grab from the extra pencils stash, but the basket is empty. Or this... you've just figured out how to sketch a fraction on a number line but you've made a mistake. You try to erase but your pencil has no eraser and the metal has just ripped your assignment. This is what my students go through every single day.
Our classes have burned out two sharpeners already, and there next one is on its last stretch.
So having a professional duty sharpener and a sufficient amount of pencils will increase work time, reduce the time we spend scrounging for pencils on a daily basis, and help keep our classroom stocked with proper basic supplies. The children can use these materials with confidence knowing there will be enough for each one of them.
