This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Fifth graders LOVE being read to by teachers. Reading aloud books to upper grades helps students hear voice, tone and fluency...all foundations for developing vocabulary, comprehension, and fluent readers. This relateable book is also critical for social-emotional development (SEL) since it promotes many discussions among students. Students share personal experiences similar to the character and can relate to the story line. Since my students are English Language Learners, it is my responsibility to read relatable stories to them that will further their growth and development. Students frequently re-visit read aloud books during their independent work time. The books read aloud are remembered for the story , their favorite character, and the message.
In addition to students revisiting the book on their own, many read aloud books become mentor texts and are referred to throughout the school year.
"Restart" by Gordan Korman is about a boy who's been a bully and hanging out with the wrong friends gets a new start after a memory-loss-inducing accident.
