My Students
Our school orchestra program is fortunate to own a number of string basses. We are short a couple of bows for the instruments, so they are not being used to their full potential. If you played in band or orchestra in school then you know how important it is to have all the pieces and parts.
I teach at a four year public high school.
We have had an orchestra program for over one hundred years, and I would like to see it continue for a hundred more. Most of the fund raising efforts and budget money goes towards the band students so when I get a chance, I try to advocate for our strong strings program. Both orchestras at our school have received superior ratings at the last 4 local Large Group Festivals run by our state music educator's association. Two of our orchestra students were chosen to perform this summer with a national honor orchestra in our nation's capital.
My Project
I am requesting funds to purchase two carbon fiber string bass bows. They are a bit more expensive than fiberglass or entry level wood bows, but they hold up better for school use and will last longer. Our program owns two cello bows of similar design and they are going strong 8 years later. I am also requesting money for some good quality bass rosin and one additional bow quiver (that is used to store the bow directly on the instrument, thus preventing it from falling onto the tile floor and becoming damaged - we are short one of these for our set of basses).

This project will impact students for years to come - a bass bow can last 30 years or longer if properly cared for. Our orchestra and band students who use these instruments deserve the chance to play with the proper equipment and sometimes that is simply beyond the means of our school budget.
