What better way to welcome someone to America than by extending a helping hand!
Can you imagine trying to read a 7th grade text when you are reading on a first grade level?
That is what my students are trying to do every day. All of my students are newcomers (in the U.S.A less than a year), or beginners (speaking English at a beginning level. Our school resides in the beautiful town of Bayside, where we have a large Chinese population and a growing Hispanic population. In my ESL class we consider ourselves a "family". My students feel they can come to me with any problem they may encounter. I consider my ESL classroom a safe place for learning and growing.
My Project
When their reading levels were tested, most of my students were functioning at a K-2 reading level. However, they are expected to make sense of 7th grade texts day in and day out. Studies show that the only way to improve your reading level is to actually read texts that are on, or slightly above, your level! They only way to help my students close the gap wit their peers is to find interesting texts that they can actually make sense of. With the addition of Time for Kids in our classroom, our students will not only have exposure to text that they can actually understand, they will have a great source of non fiction, real life news! They will be growing as readers and as citizens.
In addition to increasing their literacy skills, these magazines will also help my students explore American culture! It is so hard to be new to this country and my students long to fit in.
This project will not only help to close the achievement gap between ESL students and American students; it will help these kids adapt to a new life in a new country!
By donating to this project you are helping to create well rounded citizens who and appreciate this wonderful country.
