Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading with others compounds the joy to be found in literature. Many of my students have never had the opportunity to share their questions, connections and delight with classmates simultaneously discovering the same text.

I work with middle school students in a high-need community.

Many of them enter 6th grade on a 4th grade reading level, and they do not enjoy reading. It is my job to hook them into books early in the year so that can change. Others come into 6th grade as avid readers who are capable of understanding high school books. These students need opportunities to share their zeal for literature and they must be challenged to think deeply about books so they can continue to grow as readers.

My Project

In a classroom that is a dynamic mix of preferences, personalities, and abilities, it can be difficult to find texts that function well. For this reason, I am requesting a class set of Time for Kids magazine, and then smaller sets of a variety of engaging books. Students will form book clubs according to interest and ability, so they will have the chance to experience the fun of reading with others. They will learn how to read more actively, by forming opinions and questions to share with the book group. They can also be matched with readers on their level, be it high or low, so they can improve by working together.

Your donation will give more opportunity, for education and enjoyment, to an underprivileged group.

These students deserve more resources than they receive in this economy. Simply purchasing books and educational magazines that appeal to these students can help change their future for the better.
