My Project

In sixth grade, students study plants which include the following learning targets: identify the parts of a flower, summarize the function of the parts of a flower, identify and describe the structures involved in flower reproduction, provide examples of structures on plants used for defense, describe the necessity for a dormant period in plants, document how plants react to sunlight, water, touch, temperature, and gravity, and differentiate between positive and negative tropisms. The core vocabulary they will study is leaf, root, flower, stem, stamen, pistil, petals, sepals, anther, filament, stigma, style, ovary, style, pollen, ovule, germination, dormancy, tropism, phototropism, thigmotropism, gravitropism, hydrotropism, thermotropism, and stimuli.

The resources that have been requested will target students' ability to understand the life cycle of a plant, how plants respond to tropisms, and the structures and functions of a plant.

The specific kit that has been requested allows students to see the root structures and the sprouting of the seeds with clear sides. The maze kit also shows students how plants react to different tropisms.

The goal of this project is to provide a hands-on experience that will allow students to each create their maze, plant their seeds, and track growth over time and will provide them with the opportunity to take their plants home to enjoy. The kit will be used year after year, allowing more students the ability to experience the life cycle of a plant. My students love hands-on experiences since many of them are visual and kinesthetic learners. I provide many STEM and hands-on lab activities throughout the school year that align with the science standards that I teach. Please help me provide the students I serve with these amazing resources that will provide a more meaningful classroom experience.
