This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of teaching a class of wonderful, inquisitive fifth graders in a low-income community in South Phoenix, Arizona.
Most of my students have little experience with the world outside of their community in Phoenix. I want to expose my students to the rich diversity of life and culture that exists in countries across the world as well as the current events in our own country.
Since 95% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch their families cannot afford the luxury of a magazine subscription, let alone travel. As a public school in a low-income community we have limited resources to make social studies, science and current events stimulating and engaging to our students. I want my students to be engaged and thoughtful citizens who are aware of the current issues facing our own country and the world.
Subscriptions to TIME for Kids Magazine and Time for Kids Around the World will bring current events and foreign culture to my students in a bold, visual, reading-level accessible form. TIME for Kids will give my students the opportunity to explore the world and gain reading skills as they learn to read for both information and pleasure.
The magazines will also help my students to develop the habits of informed citizens by regularly reading news and engaging in discussion about current issues. In addition to the magazines themselves, TIME provides useful teacher-resources and ideas for integrating the magazine articles into classroom lessons, which will make the subscription even more valuable.
By donating subscriptions to TIME for Kids and TIME Around the World you will be providing 26 fifth graders with access to current events and world cultures when the magazine reaches their hands each month. My project needs 26 student subscriptions to TIME for Kids and Time for Kids Around the World. Thank you!
