My students need ink and glossy paper to complete their magazine covers.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Hill's classroom raised $368
This project is fully funded
I'm the visual arts teacher at a Title I elementary school in the Congress Heights area of Anacostia in southeast Washington, DC. I currently teach visual arts to over 400 students in grades ranging from Head Start (two-year-olds) to 5th grade (twelve-year-olds). I have been teaching in the same school for the past eight years.
Since 1927, TIME Magazine has chosen a man, woman, or idea that "for better or worse, has most influenced events in the preceding year." Though TIME's list is not an academic or objective study of the past, the list gives a contemporary viewpoint of what was important during each year.
All of my students are high achievers maybe not in the academia world but in the world itself. They understand the qualities that help shape and mold their lives and the effect they could have on others. And for that they need to be rewarded. My fifth grade students are creating magazines about themselves that detail their lives to date. They have gathered pictures, hospital records and anything else that they can possible find that is theirs and theirs alone and have included then in their magazines. They have interviewed former teachers and some neighbors on how much they have grown and whet their potential could be.
What we don’t have are the resources to aesthetically complete the project. Sure, it would be very possible to have the magazines printed on the black and white laser printer and be done with it. My students deserve a high quality to match their personalities. This becomes a tremendous keepsake for them to remember their last year of elementary school. What we would need to fully complete the project would be Glossy Paper for the covers and enough cartridges of ink to have a TIME Magazine quality product.
If you look at the long list of TIME Magazines Man of the Year recipients, the list has many Presidents and World leaders. My students belong right there next to them. They live here in Washington, DC the most powerful city in the world and there is no reason that their name should not be recognized next to them. With your help their Dream, as was Dr. King's (TIME Man of the Year 1963) can become a reality.
