My students have been confined to the indoors for over a month. They may be hungry, tired, worried, confused, frustrated, scared, and lonely. Some no longer have access to their video games because siblings are using their devices for classwork or remote learning sessions. Others are being cared for by parents or siblings who are home working remotely themselves and they don't have the time to entertain them. Some are the only children in the home while others share their home with many. Some students are doing their best to be the caretaker of their siblings.
We are at the epicenter of the virus in NY State in NYC.
My students are not just dealing with remote learning and quarantine but they are dealing with the virus itself. They have parents and grandparents who are ill. They have parents who have lost their jobs. Many have parents who are essential workers that must put themselves at risk. That is quite the burden. Through all that my students are doing their best to attend to their academics remotely. I want to offer my students a break from all the seriousness of the situation and provide them with a fun outlet.
My Project
My students are directly in the center of this pandemic in NYC. They see the realities of Covid 19 day in and day out and that in combination with trying to stay on top of their studies is a lot for a child to handle. The games and crafts included in this project are familiar to them as we use them in speech therapy. I hope to offer them a distraction from the work and stresses of the day while making that subconscious connection to the comfort of the classroom.
