My Project
For the past three years B. C. Middle School has been successfully teaching students how to organize their education through the use of planners. It's been awesome! Students are loving their planners and learning about being independent, mature, and responsible young people.
Students are most successful in the transition from Elementary to Middle to High school (and beyond) when they have the tools they need to become independent learners who can manage their own time and advocate for themselves.
Planners have been a great help in that for our Middle School students.
Here are a few quotes from 6th grade students about their planners this year:
"I like how it helps keep track of my assignments and what date it is. I don’t have any dislikes about my planner."
"I like that my planner can keep track of homework to make sure I don’t forget it."
"I like using my planner because it helps me keeping track of stuff I did yesterday."
"It helps me get ready for a test or get my homework done."
"I like using my planner because I can help my friends if they forget."
Unfortunately, due to big budget cuts district wide our school is not able to fund planners for all students next year. We are going to be using block scheduling with A/B day next year which makes those planners even more important. Without funding we will not be able to keep our expectations high for our Title I school which has high poverty, high immigrant, and high english language learning populations.
Students do not just "figure it out" when it comes to academic success. They need tools such as the planners and guidance from teachers and adults to build habits that will serve them in school and life.
