My class consists of six female students whose ages range from 15-20. They represent multicultural and diverse backgrounds. Special education classifications include severe intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, visual and orthopedic impairments, and speech and language impairment. In addition four students have seizure disorders. At school students are given the opportunity to experience community-based instruction and practice functional and academic skills. Students participate in school activities such as a Valentines Pageant, Boo in the School, and Special Olympics. Our purpose is to help students become as independent as they can be while at the same time celebrating life!
My Project
Throughout the day students use a visual schedule to help them sequence the different events that will happen in the day. Transitioning from activity to activity can become overwhelming, challenging, or upsetting to some students when they do not have enough of a heads up. With a Time Timer, students will have a visual and will be able to see how much time is left before it is time to transition. This will help students be more prepared as to when exactly the transition will take place.
An LED activity table will provide the students with another avenue to engage in sensory exploration.
In our classroom students do a lot of hands-on work with tangible tactile objects. With the LED activity table, students will be able to work on writing, tracing, science experiments, colors, shadows, and more.
Just like any other typical kid, our students enjoy engaging in play. My students will benefit from an exercise ball because it is big and easy for them to throw and catch!
