My Students
Do you remember reading TIME Magazine or Scholastic news when you were in school? I remember how excited I was each time a new issue arrived. I want to bring this excitement to my students as they read and write about current events around the world.
The majority of my students come from low-income families.
I work with about 40 ELL students in an elementary school of about 300 students. My students all speak English as their second language. Most of my students speak Hmong or Spanish at home. They are working very hard to learn English and build the language skills they need to be successful.
My Project
My students work very hard every day to learn English in order to reach grade level standards. Time for Kids will assist my students in their journey to become proficient in English.
Time for Kids will help my students grow in their reading and writing skills and can easily be integrated across other subject areas like social studies and science. Along with the subscription, they have digital issues that can be accessed through their website. These issues would a perfect supplement to the magazine.
Time for Kids is an ideal resource for teaching the Common Core State Standards. There is a huge emphasis on non-fiction text across these standards. My ELL students benefit from learning through non-fiction resources because of the rich vocabulary that is embedded within the text.
The hand pointer and world map will be used to support the non-fiction news articles. We can locate the places where the news stories are taking place in order to gain a better understanding.
Your donation will provide my students the opportunity to increase their English vocabulary, learn about current events around the world and improve their reading and writing skills.
Thank you in advance for supporting my ELL students as they strive to become proficient in English. We appreciate you!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
