Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are diagnosed with a vast array of disabilities (Asperger's Syndrome, speech impairment, ADD, mental retardation, etc.). Our middle school (grades 6, 7, 8)is located in a high-need community in NY. Funding is extremely limited, as is being able to access supplies that would make a direct positive impact on my students' lives.
Time is a very abstract concept. many of us can regulate ourselves & "know" what 5 minutes may "feel" like. However, students with various disabilities do not have the ability to regulate themselves, so when they are told, "You have 5 minutes to complete this task", they are unable to fully understand the concept & regulate themselves accordingly.
Visual timers are a wonderful solution to help empower students who struggle with time concepts. These visual timers make an abstract concept much more concrete & enable the students to become more independent. Empowering students with skills that can make them more independent & self-sufficient is an important goal I have for all of my children.
