My students need a TIME subscription so they have more access to nonfiction text.

My Students
We are an urban school with a large shelter (homeless and/or domestic violence) population. We have a very high mobility rate and rarely have a student who has gone to our building for grades kindergarten through sixth. This means we have students with a massive range of skills and experiences.
As a staff, we know that our students can succeed if given the opportunity.
We provide a wide range of services including food, clothing, and school supplies, pantry, health care services, and tutoring, both during and after school.
My Project
Nonfiction text is something that most students dread reading. It's not as "fun" as books such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Magic Tree House. Finding nonfiction text that students don't dread reading is like pulling teeth for many teachers. It's like pulling teeth, until you find something that they keep asking for. One resource that I have used before that has always been a huge hit has been the TIME for Kids magazines.
"There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book." Frank Serafini
Many of my students grumble about having to gather around for reading, or doing their independent or small group reading stations. They just haven't found the one thing that will awaken their love of reading. I want to expose my students to a different type of nonfiction text. TIME for Kids will hopefully be that one thing that kids will read where they feel it's the "right fit".
