it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Children learn to be strategic readers by using a variety of reading strategies for different purposes. Magazines provide a variety of texts that kids want to read and appeal to students with varying reading levels and interests. These magazines will make for wonderful classroom discussions.
We are a class of motivated students with a focus and passion to learn and create.
My hope is that I can guide my students and continue developing their love of reading and school. Our resources are limited, and we need your help. This is a second grade class that is located in New York City. The students come from low income housing and have extremely limited resources. Our elementary school has grades K-5 and houses over 900 students. Quality reading materials have become difficult to acquire.
My Project
The focus for the 2014-2015 school year will be conversations about reading. I can think of nothing greater than reading an inspirational magazine article and just bursting at the idea of talking about it with someone who has also read it. I am requesting 29 subscriptions to the TIME For Kids magazine. This magazine will inspire students to read, think, debate, share ideas, theories, and develop social skills through conversation. I can teach them all of these skills, but I can't do it without your generous support. Children's magazines are a key motivator for students. The articles and stories in children's magazines are relatively short and can be read somewhat quickly. In addition, a magazine's multiple features can expose a child to a wide variety of subjects and introduce them to new issues and ideas.
Your donation will make it possible for these students to read nonfiction articles and become aware of current events.
As adults we can subscribe to any magazine or newspaper that we choose, but these students cannot afford the subscription. We need your help to make this happen.
