My Students

"All I know is what I read in newspapers." ~ Will Rogers. Well, unfortunately, our students are not reading the newspapers. Indeed, TV news and the Internet aside, those famous words spoken by humorist Will Rogers ring truer today than ever.

My students are some of the most curious minds you will find.

They are not your typical nine and ten year olds. They love to learn more than most. They love school. I teach sixty students who have been identified as gifted from nine different inner city schools. Like other states around the nation, Alabama has been hurt in these hard economic times. We've been plagued with oil spills and many tornadoes. Our own county in which we live has had to declare bankruptcy. Gifted programs in Alabama get no funding so we depend on grants and wonderful programs such as Donors Choose and their generous patrons.

My Project

TIME For Kids is a weekly classroom news magazine that motivates kids to read! Issues cover a wide range of real-world topics kids love to learn about - and it's the best nonfiction text you'll find! Research has proven the following: Students who use newspapers tend to score higher on standardized achievement tests -- particularly in reading, math, and social studies -- than those who don't use them. Newspapers help teach students to be effective readers. Newspapers can help develop and improve student vocabulary, word recognition skills, and comprehension. In surveys, students overwhelmingly support the use of newspapers in the classroom and have a positive attitude toward reading newspapers. Newspapers increase awareness of and interest in current events. While Time for Kids may not be a typical newspaper, it is designed just for school age students.

With so many things happening around the world and in our own state, I was surprised to learn to the degree of the lack of knowledge from my students regarding current events.

Students who read the news in school tend to continue reading them when they become adults. I want my students to be life-long readers of the news and become involved in the world outside of their own neighborhood.
