Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Books, books, books! They are fun to read, but there are many other types of reading material. These magazines will provide my students with the opportunity to read more than just what is inside a book.

My students are an energetic group of 22 first graders eager to learn how to read and write.

Everyday my students walk into the classroom eager to learn new material and I engage them the best I can by making lots of what they learn relevant to their daily lives. Very few of my students venture beyond their neighborhoods to experience new people, places, and activities. Our school primarily serves low-income families from the surrounding neighborhoods. The school's decor emphasizes the importance of a college education and each classroom is a different college that promotes just one more place for them to learn. The goal is that these students will apply the critical thinking skills they learn at our school to their future education and their lives.

My Project

TIME magazine for K-1 grade students provides them with reading-level appropriate articles that are both educational and engaging. In addition, this weekly reader provides topics ranging from science to social studies, and current events that are relevant to students' interests and their lives. My students will benefit from this resource as they read through each article, developing a better bank of prior knowledge that they'll be able to reference as they continue through their education. In addition to that, they'll continue to develop their reading fluency and comprehension with grade level appropriate text.

Please consider donating to this project so that my students will have current reading material that will engage them in their learning and extend their knowledge of the world outside the boundaries of their community.

A community from which they rarely venture out of. Help me show them the world. Thanks!
