TIME for Kids to Nutmeg!

My students need more engaging literature. They loved reading and voting on the 2017-18 Nutmeg nominees last year, and TIME for Kids adds a perfect variety of non-fiction!

My Students

The Title I community school I teach at is in one of the roughest areas in a city in Connecticut. All of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. The vast majority of them live in non-traditional homes, and many deal with poverty. Some of my students have had parents or other close relatives in jail, and there is a very high crime rate in their neighborhoods, including shootings.

Yet even with these hardships, all of my students have one thing going for them - they all yearn to learn.

Even the children who act extremely tough on the outside swell with pride when they master something new in class. Our school is often their safe place, and I believe a big part of my job is to make it a place where they begin to learn how to overcome their hardships.

My Project

Last year my class wanted to read the books nominated for the 2018 Nutmeg Award -- a Connecticut book award where the CHILDREN vote for their favorite book and decide the winner. You extraordinary donors provided the nominated books for my class to read, and they LOVED reading the books, voting for their favorite, and anxiously waiting for the winner. They were so invested in the process!

This year my new class wants to repeat the excitement for the 2019 Nutmeg Award, but we need the nominated books!

We also need engaging non-fiction texts, and the "TIME For Kids" magazines will nicely fill that void. And since we started school last month some of my students have been asking for a few other books that I don't have in my library, so I'm hoping you will donate those as well.

My students and I truly appreciate all the books that you've generously given us via DonorsChoose over the past year... I wish you could have seen their eyes light up when they first came into my classroom. Thank you in advance for continuing to help build our library, and giving my inner-city students the ability to cast their votes for the 2019 Nutmeg Award.
