Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This upcoming school year I would like to introduce my students to the world outside our New York City classroom. I want the students to learn about the cultural, historic, and scientific events that are happening this year in both the United States and internationally. The vocabulary and content in traditional newspapers is not developmentally appropriate for my students to grasp the concepts in the newspaper and events that are taking place in the world.

In order to immerse the students into the world outside our classroom, I would like to include Time for Kids Weekly Newspaper into our classroom activities.

Reading about current events is an exercise in teaching the students to be part of a community, both locally, nationwide, and on the international level. Teaching students to read the newspaper demonstrates the importance of being an informed, active citizen. Time for Kids is a weekly classroom news magazines that is developmentally appropriate and kid friendly. Every week, all the students in my classes would receive their own non-fiction magazine that covers a range of topics and currents events. Students will be introduced to new vocabulary, have a chance to practice non-fiction reading skills, and will sharing in reading experiences with their peers. The articles in this classroom newspaper are high-interest and contain beautiful, colorful illustrations that assist students in understanding the text and make connections to the story. There are so many different ways that these educational magazines can benefit my students. Please help my students learn about the upcoming events this year that will expose them to the world outside the classroom!
