This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the proud teacher of an amazing group of 3rd graders in a community school in Harlem, where more than three-quarters of students come from low-income households. My students are hard workers, enthusiastic and eager to become stronger readers and mathematicians.

My biggest challenge is that the majority of my students are significantly behind academically.

Over 70% are starting the school year reading below grade level; 40% are considered English Language Learners; and too many have not mastered second grade math learning standards.

I am committed to helping them reach their full potential! With your support I can meet my goal of 80% of my students making a year and a half growth in reading and reaching proficiency levels in this year's math and reading state exams.

My Project

Receiving a subscription for TIME For Kids magazine will provide my students the opportunity to study and explore current events, global issues, and historical knowledge to strengthen their skills in understanding and questioning the world around them. These magazines are great tools for my students to learn how to better read informative text through magazine articles and their unique layouts. Furthermore, my students will be using articles and magazines as mentor texts to help inspire their own informative writing pieces throughout the school year. Time For Kids donations will improve my classroom because my students will be given the necessary resources to stay up-to-date with current events.
