Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 6th grade, in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood, where for about 90% of my students English is their second language. My school community is about 95% low income.

For many of my students, their life consists of school and home with the occasional Sunday outing.

Many of my students know nothing of what goes on in the world unless I bring it to their attention. About 5% of them have computers with Internet access and they are rarely allowed to use it. Others don't buy newspapers and if they do it is local papers and they go to the sports section. They need to be exposed to different types of genres and know that information can be gotten from books other than texts and novels.

My Project

I would like to ask for a subscription to Time for Kids Magazine. I do not have enough for all my students. Last year we did not anticipate so many students in our classroom. I have used it in the past and I have seen how well students respond to it. They get recent news that is from around the world. The best part is that it is at their level. The vocabulary words are at their level making the reading and comprehension so much easier. I am also asking for transparencies that can be used on the overhead. I would use them to copy the worksheets that accompany the magazine. The goal is for student created work, the overhead would provide them with a guide as to what the final product should look like.

You will make it possible for each of my students to be well informed about what goes on outside of their community.

The news that they will be reading about is current. As an adult, I enjoy reading Time because of its articles and the points that it raises, so why not let the students know about their world using their terminology?
