Students should know that history isn't a thing of the past, but it is something we create and experience in the present. I want my 1st graders to be in the know, and Time for Kids will allow them to talk about the very things that affect the world they live in.
The Social Studies textbooks that the students have are slightly outdated (copyright date 2003). Hence, instead of pushing for the purchase of more costly textbooks, it would be best to teach the students about topics that are relevant today, and allow the students to carry this information with them after the first grade.
By granting each student with a magazine subscription this will allow them to learn from up to date materials, and have conversations that are relevant to current times. The magazines are also a great alternative to heavy books for the little ones, and the subscriptions would provide just as much if not more information than the traditional textbook.
Time for Kids magazine is a great way to introduce young students to current events, and create a desire to learn about the world around them. With your help I can develop young students that have a desire to be in the loop, and explore big ideas.
