Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 5th-grade teacher at a Title I school located in East Palo Alto, California. One of our goals as a school is to serve the WHOLE CHILD. This means in addition to providing a comprehensive, academic education, we also prioritize students' social and emotional learning and well-being. I work to provide our students with the best education possible by granting them access to learning materials.

I strongly believe that our students deserve the same opportunities afforded to students in more affluent communities.

Ninety-one percent of our students participate in the free and reduced-price meal program. Ninety percent of our students speak English as a second language. Ninety-eight percent of our students will be first-generation college students. Ninety percent of our students are Latino; 6.5% are African-American; 2% are Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.

My Project

Although I teach 5th grade there is a range of readers spanning from 2nd - 8th grade. With this project, I hope to support my lower-level readers to have engaging books in order to practice the new skills they are learning in the reader's workshop.

TIME for kids will help my students learn fun and exciting information about a variety of topics.

Often, these students feel disconnected from the class because they are stuck reading boring printouts of information. I know they will be excited to read these books and learn!
