My Students
"Running for office was definitely something I've thought about. When I was younger, I wanted to major in political science. And I've been engaged in current events since I was a kid. If I can make a difference and feel passionately and capable, then I would. Why not?"
~Queen Latifah
My students are inner-city kids that attend a small, public neighborhood school.
They don't have a lot of exposure to things outside of city life, and they don't make reading a huge part of their day either. Classroom magazines have been a staple in my classroom for the last 3 years, and it has very positive effects. For example, students become aware of what kids their age experience in other parts of the country and world. We learn about what changes other kids have made in the world. Students then ask questions, reflect, and write.
My Project
The classroom magazines are high-interest and low reading level for my middle school students with a lot of graphic representations of information. This allows my not-so-avid readers to read articles that pertain to their age group with minimal frustration. So in addition to great class discussions and debates, these magazines allow for independent reading, reflection, and writing assignments.
Like the quote by Queen Latifah above, if you can help, why not?
I hope to inspire students. However they use that inspiration is up to them. By knowing what is going on in the world, my students are more informed to later make important decisions like voting. Maybe one student will participate in social action after she reads about a youth movement in another town. Maybe another student will be able to participate in a discussion at a family event, and he decides he's interested.
