Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In a Global Studies classroom, my students are to learn about the world, current events and understand multiple perspectives surrounding issues that might affect them.

My students are 5th and 6th graders in a school located in a large urban city.

Our school is a Title 1 school, where the majority of our students are English Language Learners and receive free lunch. Our students are eager to learn and very curious about the world they live in; however, their lack of resources impacts their ability to have easy access to materials, such as books, magazines, newspapers and even the Internet.

My Project

Teaching a Global Studies class with limited materials makes it nearly impossible when it comes time to exposing my students to the world around them. My students are expected to learn about history, as well as current events, and understand multiple perspectives attached to these issues, some of which might directly impact them. My students need a class subscription to TIME For Kids and 12 seat cushions in order to read and work comfortably in their groups. With the Time for Kids magazines, my students will not only be able to read interesting non fiction text, but will also use the magazine to learn about current issues impacting communities around the world. The magazines will support my students' learning about the world since the articles revolve around issues that affect other students their age, making the reading more relatable. Most of my students' learning occurs when they are working together and in groups. The cushions will allow them to work comfortably on the carpet as they meet with their groups and discuss the content in the Time for Kids magazine issues.

The Time for Kids magazine will provide my students with high interest news articles written at their grade level.

These news stories till teach them about the world they live in and hopefully spark an interest in them, which is difficult to attain by simply reading a textbook. These magazine issues will expose them to real life events happening around the world and might even inspire my students to take action and make a difference.
