This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students I have the privilege to teach are diverse with various academic, behavioral, emotional, and social needs. With two 4th grade classes and a 5th grade class, I see around 65 students everyday. It is my duty to meet their needs, be flexible, and see that I deliver interactive and engaging instructional material to keep them engaged. While they may lack skyrocketing academic scores, they make up in their tenacity, ingenuity, gift of gab, and huge sense of community.
It is important for me to provide a space where everyone feels welcomed and respected.
As young preteens are interested in Fortnite, YouTube, and Snap Chat today, I have to stay current with their interests and use them to my advantage. Every Friday, we partake in Fitness Friday where popular dance music instructs them to take a break from learning and simply act like children. These moments are crucial to building strong relationship with my students.
My students face and conquer challenges in and out of the school building that make them resilient and head strong. It is with this project that I wish to fulfill a need that will help to make their learning experience meaningful.
My Project
Having been in my classroom for the last seven years, I have been equipped with Social Studies books with Bill Clinton as the president that I currently utilize. Having "TIME for Kids" magazines will propel my students into the present with intriguing current events while discussing futuristic ideas. These materials will also fit their reading needs by being leveled, having relevant vocabulary, and enticing graphics. This would make a tremendous impact by giving my students a view into current concepts that their outdated textbooks cannot provide. Whether in small group or as a class, these magazines will be a hit with my students!
