This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 2nd and 3rd graders in an urban setting, 99% poverty. Their experiences with technology are limited and our funds also limited. My students learn science concepts and math best when they are engaged in activities; they retain their learning longer.
We currently have only a few timers so each student is not able to practice timing the actions of balls as we learn both timing and collecting data. Many cannot see the classroom clock well enough to use it's second hand; they need glasses or have lost/damaged their glasses. So students are doing more observation than "doing" and lose interest quickly as we collect data.
If students could work in partners while one uses the timer and the other drops the balls they could collect data together; their own data and observe the difference in ball motion both from sight as well as data analysis later. For example: they could see how long it takes for different types of balls to stop bouncing. As a class we can collect classroom data of each ball and make a large graph of their data. This would make their science and math learning real and relevant and therefore be retained for later use by students.
You help will ensure my students are engaged in their learning as they work to gain skills using technology and begin steps to understand the importance of data collection and analysis.
