My Students
I teach fourth grade at a Title I school in Louisiana. I have wonderful students in my class who love to learn. My school is very dynamic and all of our 4th grade teachers work together to make one-on-one and tactile learning possible for our students.
Despite some personal hardships, the parents of my students are cooperative, supportive and desire that their children receive the best education possible.
Our area has been hit hard by hurricanes, mill closures, and the economy is suffering. School is a refuge for my students and it is important to me that they remember 4th grade as a bright spot in their lives. They deserve to be welcomed, loved, and supported with a teacher who respects their individuality and celebrates each child's special talents.
My Project
I am requesting a subscription of Weekly Readers and Time Weekly Magazines for the 2010-2011 school year because they are a fun way for students to learn and keep up with current events. I have been fortunate to have these yearly and the kids get so excited each week when we use them. When we are finished with them I send them to the other 4th grades (there are 6 classes all together) and so over 100 children get to use them! I use them for literacy, science, social studies, and ethics. Each issue comes with reproducibles which is what we use the copy paper for. The kids love to do the comprehension quizzes which are in the teacher's edition that I copy for them. They compete to see who will get the most questions correct from the issues and I give them prizes for correct answers. I keep a binder for past issues and the children love to look through the binder at all the past issues. This way, the issues continue on from year to year.
4th grade will begin team teaching this coming school year and I am very excited to be teaching Science and Social Studies.
I will use Time and Weekly Readers each week to teach 75 students. Our textbooks for these subjects are dull and not aligned with 4th grade Grade Level Expectations. Time and Weekly Readers are fabulous tools to make learning dynamic and hands on for the students. My children love school and love learning; it makes teaching them a privilege instead of a job.
