This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My young students are kindergartners. They are fun, energetic, and curious five to six year olds. My students are ready to learn about math, reading, and writing. My students are eager to learn math facts and how to be a good readers and writers. My students live on the southwest side of Chicago. Most of my students are second language learners.
We like to draw and write in our writing journals, and our teacher help us to write complete sentences.
It is exciting to be an author and an illustrator. We are also learning how to add and subtract, use a ten-frame, and count on a number line. Who knows? Maybe we might have a famous author, illustrator, or the next math genius in our class!
My Project
My first graders to be need materials to learn the value of money and to tell time on a clock. These much needed materials will help my students gain much needed math skills as the begin first grade. Many students struggle to learn how to tell time on a analog clock due to digital devices. It is so important for students to learn about currency and what it's worth. Providing young students with hands on materials to understand, apply and put these newly learned skills into action will help prepare them for real life math skills. So many primary students struggle with these basic math skills due in part to lack of exposure and learning experiences.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
