My students are the forgotten, the ignored, the unfortunate. The school has no library, so the teachers must supply them with books as the neighborhood library is too dangerous to get to on any given day. They come from a neighborhood in Chicago where guns are more common than books; however, they have dreams, big dreams.
They dream of college and careers.
They dream of briefcases and polished shoes. They dream of a savings account and success. My students can be successful, but they have not reached their full potential and won't without a basic necessity: books.
My Project
My students are so far removed from the Vietnam War at this point, but Mr. O'Brien has written a narrative that can transport those students into the tragic, yet sometimes laughable times of war. The discussions that this books purports not only allows for in depth understanding of what it is to be a soldier at such a young age, but also as what happens to innocent boys when they come back lost. The things they carried as soldiers I could never imagine, just as I can never imagine the things my students carry on a daily basis. I just want them to carry this book and learn from it.
