As the school counselor, one of my main responsibilities is to address the needs of the "whole child" and treat every student holistically. My students come with varying needs, and over 90% belong to impoverished homes. Their diverse cultures, needs, and experiences mean that one size does not fit all when it comes to guidance and counseling.
At my school, I wear many hats and I facilitate a vast diversity of students' and teachers' needs alike.
Currently, the capacity of my school budget has been limited and funds are usually used out of pocket. As the school counselor, I take a very active role in my students' lives. I visit classrooms daily and give presentations that build character and educate the students about hygiene, core values, and social behavior. Being heavily involved means sacrifices to ensure our mission is being met each year and that is providing an equal opportunity to each student who walks in our educational organization.
My Project
A great number of my students are ELL/ESOL who were displaced during the earthquake in Haiti and relocated to South Florida several years ago. Now we have students coming in from islands affected by Hurricane Irma who also need assistance in terms of clothing and school supplies.
More than half of my students have no access to basic commodities in their households, including school supplies and uniforms.
Almost every day, I have to try to accommodate a child who came to school out of uniform or school supplies, because they just migrated from an impoverished or devastated island or their parents cannot afford to purchase what is needed for school.
Unfortunately, due to limited funding, I am running out of ways to provide the classroom supplies needed to facilitate each child that comes to my door. This year I have decided to collect as many school essentials as possible and host a Back to School Extravaganza, where students in need will receive a school bag stuffed with many school supplies, such as erasers, pencils, rulers and sharpeners.
More than half of students from low‑income households
