Tigers' Business Proposal

My students need a Cricut machine and basic supplies and accessories to develop a business making cards, banners, and scrapbooks to sell as per their vocational goals.

My Students

Most of my students will never have opportunities outside of what we can provide at school. They do not have access to jobs, recreation and leisure activities, community involvement like most high school students. This is an opportunity to give them that chance.

My students attend a public, separate school in NC for students with special needs; including autism, mental illness, Down's Syndrome, etc.

There are approximately 130 students at my school between grades Kindergarten through graduation at age 22. I work with students, aged 14 and up to help develop their vocational skills and goals. Some specific skill sets we work on are money skills, job preparedness skills, cleaning and organization skills, and "soft skills" like being respectful, listening to others, carrying on appropriate conversations. My students carry out a wide range of both on-campus and community volunteer opportunities such as cleaning, stocking, organizing, mass mailings, providing dinner to local senior citizens, etc. For each job they complete, there is a sense of pride and accomplishment that cannot be achieved through any other means. My students understand that it is "normal" to obtain self-fulfillment, but most of them will never be given that opportunity.

My Project

In order to gain hands-on experience with running a business including marketing, supply and demand, assembly line completion, organization, and follow through, I would like to set up a "business" for my school. Our business will use the Cricut machine and accessories to create a variety of homemade cards, party banners, party supplies, tags, labels, scrapbook pages, etc. We will market our services by creating examples of each product to showcase to parents and friends in our community as well as creating an online store through Etsy. My students will work on creating spreadsheets and budgets and organization systems to keep track of the supply and demand and each step of the process, including quality control checks and follow-up with customers. As the business grows, we can add in more items to our "store".

My students often have problems with fine motor activities and the Cricut machine is perfect for them to be able to create professional looking homemade items that can be unique and beautiful at the same time.

The sense of accomplishment and belonging they will receive from this project is priceless.
