I teach fifth-grade math and science at a Head Start through 5th-grade elementary school in North Miami. Most of my students are high-poverty and have very limited technology at home.
After Hurricane Irma struck, the financial situation for most of our students became even worse and up to this day, they are still facing the challenges of coming to school with basic supplies.
Sadly, for most of our students, internet access and the use of computers or any kind of technology, are luxuries that they just do not have at home.
My students are always excited to use technology in our classroom, and when we do math or science center activities, they rush to the workstations, in order to explore online resources. As aforementioned, most do not have computer access at home, so the only opportunity they have to learn using technology, is at school.
My Project
As we are embarking to be designated officially a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) school, technology has now infiltrated every aspect of how our math and science classes are taught.
After Hurricane Irma struck, most students came back with fewer supplies and less access to the tools they need to be successful.
Even with limited resources, using technology in my classroom has proved to be quite a success as the students learn quickly, discover and enjoy every lesson while developing STEAM exploration, as well as analytical and critical thinking skills.
I am requesting five Dell Chromebook computers, which will be used mainly for STEAM online activities. My students now need to experience actually utilizing technology on a personal "one on one" basis, to enhance their language skills as well as computer skills. Currently, my classroom is very limited in terms of technology/computers. In fact, there is only a teacher's workstation and four very ancient student workstations in my classroom.
We are aiming to become a STEAM school in the upcoming school year, therefore, having our students get direct access to technology will prepare them for the near future. Your support would enhance my students' lives and expose them to using technology in our classroom.
