Tiger Tools for Knowing Science

Help me give my students the tools to achieve and succeed while conducting science experiments and associated scientific research in a brand new lab facility that contains no equipment or supplies.

This project is fully funded

My Students

For 18 of the last 20 years, my students, enrolled in advanced science classes, have earned 50% of all of the positions in the regional science fair in our area of the state. In 2019, we earned a whopping 72% of all of the awards. These same students have gone on to compete and win at the state level, and fifteen have advanced to the international competition. Due to the pandemic, these competitions have not been possible since the spring of 2019. My school district has passed a bond issue to allow for upgrades to lab facilities, but the bond does not provide lab equipment necessary to continue our tradition of excellence. This is tremendous considering that 100% of my students are underrepresented minority students who live below the poverty line.

Science and scientific discoveries are achieved by implementation of the pedagogy and application of the practices of science.

In January 2021, we are will begin a modified hybrid model that involves one teacher and several students face to face and the remaining students receiving simultaneous virtual instruction from the teacher. During this time, students cannot share any supplies or equipment that will be necessary to conduct experiments and research.

My Project

My students are high school students in an urban inner-city environment. Many of them have never conducted or have limited exposure to an experiment prior to enrolling in my classes. Students in my classes are guided to select personalized research topics bases on a questionnaire and interview with the teacher. They are asked to list any five topics about which they wish to learn more. The student and teacher then brainstorm on a way to combine as many of these five topics as possible into one unique research project. Past winning projects have involved the effect of OTC pain relievers on red blood cells and the implications to sickle cell patients. Another involved an alternative construction technique for the World Trade Center that could have potentially prevented its collapse on 9/11. Electronic assistive devices for individuals with dexterity issues. A car seat for infants with sensors to alert parents that the child remains in the seat after the car has been shut off. The effects of improper disposal of OTC pain relivers and he effects on the aquatic food chain and ecosystem with Daphnia magna as the sample organisms. Studying glucose metabolism in crickets and the effect of natural supplements in regulating this process with an eye to human diabetes.

This list is includes just a few of the examples of the wonderful award-winning projects designed and conducted by MY students.
