Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are college bound juniors and seniors in a 6-12 school, living in and around Hartford, Connecticut. They come from a multitude of cultures and backgrounds and bring their own flare and passion to my classroom. We have students from all over the world including large populations from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Bosnia. We are located in a low-income area, where many of my students reside and all students who attend our school qualify for free lunch.

Our district is facing extreme budget cuts which makes it impossible to order any new equipment that could benefit the students.

Our mission at SMSA is to develop a group of life-long learners who will not only attend college but succeed there as well.

My students at SMSA are energetic, intuitive and have so much to offer the world. They respond to hands-on learning and this year they have helped me revive a studio that has been dormant in our building for nine years, going as far as creating their own show: Tiger Time. This studio has become a source of pride for my students, but they are working with equipment that is extremely outdated, especially the camcorders.

My Project

This year my students and I have taken the initiative to begin to run a broadcasting studio that has been collecting dust in our building through the Sports Journalism course I teach. While we have had some success running segments and projects, our main cameras are woefully outdated. Students are taking their own time to get footage of our school sporting events, dances and other activities, only to have it matched up with a grainy and less than exciting studio clip.

Having this requested Sony Hand Held Camcorder will allow my students to not be shackled to the studio.

They will be able to go outside and get footage without the concern that what they film will out-shadow the information of the piece they are working on. Students will be able to attend an SMSA sporting events, record with this camera, get interviews with players and coaches and then take it back into the studio to do a game recap. They will then be able to transfer their work into our editing suite and create a completed segment that looks the same throughout.

This Sony camcorder will allow my students to have true hands-on learning and career preparation. My students will have creative control and will be utilizing critical thinking, literacy and technological skills through this class. Additionally, the entire school will benefit by having these cameras. The use of these new cameras will allow students in our school be stay informed on school events, sporting events and get to see each other in action. This camcorder will allow students to speak to their peers and help build a feeling of community and camaraderie in our school.
