Tiger Nation Field Day!

My students need balls to play with during PE and recess, a tug-of-war rope for field day, and potato sacks for PE.

My Students

I am a PE coach at a beautiful school in North Miami, where my students are high poverty and high risk. Finally, it was decided that our department needed a makeover and currently the district is building a new PE court for our 500 plus students. Unfortunately, while waiting, we have limitations.

We have aspiring athletes, some who have represented teams nationally in football and basketball.

Our children are very active and motivated to learn. Some our students come from home environments where the only positive outlet they have is at school or playing a sport. Fortunately, the district has started renovating our school premises and this plan included our PE department. We will be getting a new playground as well as a much needed PE classroom.

My Project

While waiting on the construction to be completed (hopefully before the school year ends), our students are restricted to a regular classroom or sometimes the grass area outside as there are no grounds for sports as yet. I find myself having to improvise ways to keep my students active and content as they cannot play traditional sports (basketball, etc.) until the grounds are completed. The sports balls especially, can be used both indoors and outdoors. The students will be able to exercise and stay fit whether they are inside a classroom or under the trees outside of the classroom. The tug of war rope and potato sack bags are for our upcoming field day and also for PE and recess fun.

I believe that providing my students with indoor/outdoor sports equipment and field day games/equipment will make a difference as currently, they are very limited in terms of what they do for PE every day.
