This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 9th grade English at a small, inner city, high-needs school in New York. The vision of our school is for each student to attend college, and for most of my students, they will be the first in their families to do so.
Resources have always been tight, but now our district is facing an additional 11% budget cut. Since our school is new, we lack many of the resources of larger, more established schools. In fact, we are housed in trailers right now. Additionally, many of my students are learning English as a 2nd language and need additional support. We have a limited number of class texts and use of the school copier is always dicey.
With a document camera, I can model the writing process more authentically and without going through expensive sheets of chart paper. My students can participate in peer editing by placing their work under the document camera and receive immediate peer feedback. They can learn about text layout from the dictionary to a history textbook by placing the text under the camera.
Only one copy of a text? No problem! I can use the document camera daily for shared reading. My students would all be able see the text that I'm reading aloud and follow along. No longer would I need to make countless copies of reading pieces. For our drama unit, students could draw the background scenery for the play and project the image behind the actors. The possibilities are endless!
Your donation of a document camera would help my students improve their writing and editing skills. Often it is the college application essay that is the stumbling block for inner city students. Please help them clear this hurdle!
