My Project
This year, my learners set a goal to have the most impactful project at our annual school showcase. Every year, we want our projects to be meaningful, challenging, and innovative. Last year, my learners undertook a massive year-long project and brought their imagination to reality by building a fully operational glow mini-golf course. One that, on the last day of school, a student turned around before leaving for summer and exclaimed, “Wow – I still can’t believe we did that.”
Many of my learners this year came in with the goal of outdoing last year’s amazing project.
This year, we will make a fully functioning world clock set for our school. This project will include key Algebra 2 concepts. Learners will be given creative space to explore the cultural aspects of a chosen “time zone” to design operational clocks that depict important cultural symbols. Students will work in groups using graphing applications to create their clock designs. These designs will then be used in our laser engraver to create unique clock faces for each group. Once printed, the groups will construct a functioning clock kit on their wood disc thereby creating an operational clock set to the correct time zone. All groups will combine their clocks to construct a massive world clock display in our school’s commons. The items we are requesting will help us to have a visually impactful end product that students will take pride in and also utilize each day as they walk through the hallways.
Our school exists to grant access to a high-quality STEM education regardless of background or socioeconomic status. Thus, it is my personal goal to challenge each student through the opportunity to collaborate on a unique year-long project intended to push each student to grow through productive struggle and creative ambition
