My Students

Meet our algebra class, 167 students as diverse as the Florida sun is hot. Our students face the normal challenges that every kid faces, plus the added pressure of high stakes testing. These students are eager to learn and a pleasure to teach and would greatly benefit from your kindness.

Our school is just five years old.

We are located next to a water treatment plant overlooking beautiful Biscayne Bay, in South Florida. Our students represent a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds. We have over 50 nations represented and more than 20 languages can be heard in our hallways. This international melting pot makes our school a great place to work and learn. A drawback to our diversity is that we have students that represent many social-economic groups. The income disparity of our parents keep our school from qualifying for Title I funding (despite the fact that we have a significant number of students on free and reduced lunch). Not having access to Title I funds limits our ability to buy the necessary hardware and computer peripheral items (such as graphing calculators) that greatly enhance education and close the digital divide. Our students are great, and those that have share, but frankly it isn't enough. Our students need your help.

My Project

The challenge that Algebra 1 students face is the overwhelming amount of new abstract concepts that are introduced in the course. The concept of the line, the slope, visualizing the relationship between slopes and parallel and perpendicular lines and seeing solution of systems of equations is very difficult for many 9th graders. Now add the pressure of a high stakes test and ever more challenging state and national standards. The graphing calculators will allow students to visualize these abstract concepts and make it possible for learners to own the concept. The calculators will be used in an Algebra 1 math lab setting where students can use them to run through vast amounts of examples much faster than previously possible. Though the books provide good examples, they are static and already built, eliminating the student from the creation process. Once the students are fully exposed and show a full awareness of the concept they will practice test-like problems in actual test settings.

The graphing calculators are becoming an integral part of math education.

Most of our economically disadvantaged students can't afford to purchase these calculators which simply furthers their competitive edge against other students. Having a class set of calculators (in addition to those students that have them and willing share) will directly impact all of the students in all six of the class that I teach. These are rugged tools that last a long time, so the impact will also be long-lasting.
