Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach chemistry to a diverse group of artistic students at a Title I visual and performing arts school in downtown Los Angeles. Students come to our school from all over the city to our public high school to receive a top notch education in both academics and their chosen art form (music, dance, visual or theater) and go on to study at some of the top academic colleges and art schools across the country. When my students start reading about all of the chemicals they come into contact with every day, they are surprised, curious, and eager to learn more!
I am always looking for ways to motivate my students in my classroom with innovative and exciting learning opportunities.
My Project
My classroom is a mixture of eager and reluctant learners. One of my goals is to support students' development of speaking skills- especially about science. With my eager learners, this is easy. But with my reluctant learners, I need an innovative and unique way to help them grow in their speaking skills.
With the Q Ball, my students, especially the kinesthetic learners, will be engaged and eager to participate in our classroom discussions.
The QBall is a soft throwable dodgeball type ball with a built in microphone. This tool will not only increase the engagement in my classroom, but will allow quiet students to be heard throughout the lesson. Additionally, my students don't get nearly enough exercise through their PE class, and I am hoping that the introduction of the QBall in my science classroom will help them to get up and moving and be more physically active in their learning. For some of my special education and ADHD students, this might be just the trick they need to focus and engage in the lesson!
I am really excited about the opportunity to bring QBall into our classroom for classroom debriefs of inquiry activities and discussion about science related articles!
