This is how my student population is often described: the "throw-aways" in the school system. I teach Social Studies at my district's Alternative school. My students range in grades from 7 to 12. The gang-bangers, the chronic discipline problems, the "thug" wannabes, the drug users and dealers, the teenage mothers - these are my kids. I have worked with them for 3 years now, and can attest to one thing: none of these children are "throw-aways". I refuse to give up on any child, especially those that the system has all but given up on. We tend to get the "left-overs" from the other schools - the textbooks that are 10 years old and falling apart, the computers that are antiquated, the printers that don't work most of the time. We have no library at our school. We have no gym at our school. The "throw-aways" are out of sight to the rest of the district and out of mind for the most part. What I need help with are teaching supplies for my classroom. Specifically: maps. One of the required skills that students must master in order to graduate from high school is the ability to read and interpret different types of maps. My job is to motivate these kids to want to learn and to graduate: dropping out is not an option in my classes. It is a tough job to do and simple supplies like maps would help tremendously! Thank you so much for any consideration you can give to these at-risk kids!
