This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine an eight-year-old's amazement when they read about the moon or the Yoruk tribe taking a bite of salmon to celebrate? After reading, I kept being asked numerous questions about subjects I had limited knowledge about. I wanted to enhance my lessons, to ensure I kept the intense level of learning.
I graduated with two bachelor degrees, and a masters in education.
I have taken many workshops, and am a National Board Certified Teacher. I identify with my students from immigrant parents learning English. My teaching career has been a beautiful and challenging 18 year journey. I am constantly looking for ways to help each child dive into reading and get excited about their own questions. Reading was my ticket to success, and I strive for them to become better readers and critical thinkers. Our class goals include Never Be Afraid To Ask Questions. So I am constantly being asked questions that are not in my realm of expertise, and must always learn new concepts to then deliver to my students. I have taken several trainings, but most of the science related classes are online, and most resources are online. The ipad would allow me access to those sites, and then be able to connect to the document reader and showcase enhanced lessons to my students.
My Project
I am requesting an ipad air to enhance my teaching. I push for monitoring comprehension, based on proven strategies that work. So once the kids begin to understand hard texts, I end up with tons of questions, things that are not even part of the third grade curriculum sometimes. In the realm of science I plan to use the ipad to visit nasa.gov/education/materials to read about expert's experiences with missions. They offer an array of resources for an educator to enhance their space lessons. I also plan to use the ipad to take some classes on Scholastic.com/teachers in which educators can also learn about specific astronaut's experiences. I would also like to take the educator trainings on PBSTeacherLine, specifically the class Children's Authors on the Web: Online Sites that Motivate Students to Write. All these trainings will ensure I deliver enhanced lessons, and give me the tools to answer all of my student's questions to keep the joy of learning alive.
After reading about landing on the moon, many of the kids loved learning how the spaceship worked.
So I looked for videos, yet I could not connect my outdated computer from back of the classroom to the document reader. Having an ipad to quickly show that would of enhanced their learning and added to their excitement about science. Or showing authors perspective on revision would motivate my students to also revise their own writing. All this would make 3rd grade rock!
