My Students

We are a Title I, lottery-based entry charter school serving a diverse range of students in fully inclusive classrooms.

Our school focuses on Project Based Learning with a real-world connection. A high percentage of our students come from homes where English is a second language. We have a high percentage of students who receive free and reduced price lunch. Our teachers design projects that go across multiple content areas. Projects are designed to allow for collaboration, critique and revision.

My Project

Students will use the cameras for artistic self-expression and as a tool to support literacy. For their first project, the second grade will collaboratively produce their own photo book inspired by the Jean Marzollo's 'I Spy' picture riddle books. They will learn to photograph collections of their personal items, and write rhyming riddles to accompany the photos. Students will combine the photographs and riddles to create our new 'I Spy Second Grade' book. Our arts students will enjoy the camera set for years to come.

Photography is a very accessible art form - students who may feel frustrated with drawing and painting often find that they can successfully express themselves artistically through photography.

This success builds self-esteem in the art room and beyond.
